Childcare & Early Years (COVID 19)

If you wish the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead to try and locate a school place, please complete our Key Worker Childcare Application Form. We will then contact you as soon as possible to discuss further

The government has asked parents to keep their children at home, wherever possible, and for schools to remain open only for those children of workers critical to the COVID-19 response - who absolutely need to attend.

Parents whose work is critical to the COVID-19 response include those who work in health and social care and in other key sectors outlined by the UK Government (external link). Many parents working in these sectors may be able to ensure their child is kept at home and every child who can be safely cared for at home must be. Please, therefore, follow these key principles:

  1. If it is at all possible for children to be at home, then they must be.
  2. If a child needs specialist support, is vulnerable or has a parent who is a critical worker, then educational provision will be available for them.
  3. Parents should not rely for childcare upon those who are advised to be in the stringent social distancing category such as grandparents, friends, or family members with underlying conditions.
  4. Parents must also do everything they can to ensure children are not mixing socially in a way which can continue to spread the virus. They must observe the same social distancing principles as adults.
  5. Residential special schools, boarding schools and special settings continue to care for children wherever possible.

If your work is critical to the COVID-19 response, or you work in one of the critical sectors defined by the government and you cannot keep your child safe at home then your children will be prioritised for education provision. In the first instance, you should contact your child's current school or early years provider for further information about keeping your child in school. If your child's current school or early years provider is closed, then the local authority may be able to find an alternative school place. This may not be local to you, and could potentially be in another local authority area. Where appropriate, assistance with home to school transport will be provided.

You can find here the UK Government guidance for parents and carers on the closure of schools. (external link)

Any placement in a school other than the school your child currently attends is on a temporary basis only. If you require a permanent transfer for your child you must make a separate in-year transfer application on the RBWM Council website here.

The advice from the government is that nurseries, childcare settings and childminders are included in the education setting guidance and will remain open where they can to support key workers and vulnerable children.
We will be working with our childcare providers to agree what the offer looks like and when that might be delivered eg extending hours or weekends.

This list is subject to change. Parents will need to ring or email (via their website) the setting/childminder to ask if they will be taking children from other settings.  We would like to reiterate that it is really important that you only ask for your children to be in childcare if you are a Key Worker and have absolutely no other option for your child. This virus is very infectious and the less of people there are together in a setting the better.
All childcare is Ofsted registered, and subject to availability.
Any arrangements are between the families and providers – this is for signposting purposes only, based on the information available to us at the time.
If you are a critical keyworker and cannot find childcare during the Bank Holiday Weekend and have tried local providers listed below then please contact Lindsay O’Connell (for Maidenhead) or Sarah Cottle (for Windsor and Ascot)
