Short Breaks (Respite)

Childminder Plus

Temporary Changes to the Achieving for Children Short Breaks for RBWM

AfC RBWM’s Children and Young People Disability Service co-ordinates the Childminder Plus service as part of its programme to provide families with short breaks.  Childminder Plus provides families with a bank of specialist childminders trained to work with children and young people aged 0-18 with special educational needs and disabilities. The childminders are Ofsted registered and are part of RBWM’s community childminders.

This scheme is used for short breaks in the day, after school, weekends and overnight but is not used for day to day childcare for parents and carers to go out to work.  Childminder Plus is also available during the holiday periods.

The child or young person is generally looked after within the Childminder’s home, where they have access to a range of suitable play equipment and facilities to promote their learning and development.  The Childminders may also take the child or young person to groups and on outings.

Windsor and Maidenhead Childminding Plus Team, work with children who have various Special Educational Needs and Disabilities.

Referral for Short Break Services is through the Early Help and  Multi-Agency Safeguarding Hub (MASH).  See the referral section below for details.

The Childminder Plus scheme is accessible for a range of needs including children and young people with physical difficulties, medical needs and limited communication (through the use of Makaton, PECs and communication books).
Where a child/young person has complex medical needs such as epilepsy or gastrostomy feeding, Childminders would have training with the Community Nursing Team on individual medical care plans.

If you would like to make a new referral for short break services, please contact the Multi-Agency Safeguarding Hub (MASH) and Early Help Hub. Further information and request forms for the MASH are available on the RBWM Safeguarding Partnership - Early Help and Prevention section.

Families who are receiving ongoing services from the Children and Young People Disability Service can contact the service directly.

Where a child or young person is accessing the Childminder Plus scheme as part of an assessed Short Break through the Children and Young People Disability Service, families are not charged.
